Yes, you read that correctly: Michelle Williams is married! The Manchester by the Sea actress revealed in a Vanity Fair interview that she secretly wed indie musician Phil Elverum in a private ceremony in the Adirondacks with a few friends and both of their daughters present.
Williams, 37, opened up about her “very sacred and very special” relationship with Elverum, 40, and creating a new family together (Williams is mother to Matilda, 12; Elverum has a 3-year-old daughter of his own).
“Obviously I've never once in my life talked about a relationship,” she said. “But Phil isn't anyone else. And that's worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.”
In previous interviews, Williams revealed that falling in love again while grieving was a challenge. In 2008, she had lost her partner and her daughter's father, the late actor Heath Ledger.
"We were trying to deal with grief, and that can't be dealt with publicly," she told Elle in an interview last year. But despite the hardships of coping with a lost love, the Brokeback Mountain actress said she stayed hopeful that she would find a loving relationship again.
“I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, 'Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes,'” she told Vanity Fair.
Williams said that keeping her life private has helped her cope with her loss. Her now-husband also lost his wife, illustrator and musician GeneviГЁve CastrГ©e. CastrГ©e died of cancer 18 months after giving birth to their daughter.
“I don't really want to talk about any of it,” she said. “But there's that tease, that lure, that's like, 'What if this helps somebody? What if somebody who has always journeyed in this way, who has struggled as much as I struggled, and looked as much as I looked, finds something that helps them?' Don't settle. Don't settle for something that feels like a prison, or is hard, or hurts you,” Williams insists. “If it doesn't feel like love, it's not love.”
